'Flora'

Flora is an original acrylic and water-soluble oil painting on wood panel (A2, 42 × 59.4 cm), inspired by ancient temperate rainforest sites in Wales. The scene was captured at Picton Castle Gardens on a wet summer’s day, when colour deepened, textures softened, and the forest felt alive with quiet movement.

This work celebrates abundance and interconnection. Lush green, biodiverse plant forms weave and warp around one another in a shared rhythm, creating a sea of green punctuated by bark tones that ooze rich purples and hints of fungal spores. The painting reflects the harmony found within these ecosystems—where every surface supports life.

Painted directly onto wood, the natural grain of the panel is intentionally left visible, allowing the surface to echo the age, texture, and history of the trees themselves. Layered colour and expressive mark-making evoke the dense networks of epiphytes, bracken, mosses, and lichens that define these endangered rainforest landscapes.

Flora invites the viewer to step into a moment of stillness and growth, honouring the resilience and beauty of temperate rainforests.
