The original painting Cliffs of Dover was created live during my appearance on Landscape Artist of the Year 2026 (Episode 3), filmed at the iconic White Cliffs of Dover. Painted on an A3 wood panel, the piece captures my personal response to the landscape during the timed competition.
Positioned in Pod 1, my allocated view looked out over Port of Dover, with only the faintest glimpse of the famous cliffs. Wanting the cliffs to play a stronger role in my composition, I took the initiative before the competition began to walk closer to the fencing, where I made quick sketches and reference photos of the chalk cliffs. These became the key visual anchor for the final painting.
Working quickly throughout the day, I built the composition directly onto the wood panel before layering vibrant colour and texture to evoke the dramatic atmosphere of the coastline. The painting was selected as one of the final three works on the day, with judges praising its vibrancy and the initiative taken to seek out a viewpoint that suited my artistic approach.
